William G. Marshall, Jr., M.D. died very unexpectedly on July 12, 2023, after a brief illness.

Bill was born in Henderson, Kentucky on January 19, 1953, to William G. Marshall, Sr., and Jo Ann Marshall.  Bill graduated Henderson City High School in May of 1971 as valedictorian of his class.  Bill then attended Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, before being accepted to the University of Kentucky Medical School in the fall of 1973 after only two years of college.

Bill graduated from the University of Kentucky Medical School in 1977, ranked seventh in his class.  He then did a five year general surgery residency at the prestigious University of Alabama Birmingham, in Birmingham, Alabama.  Following completion of this general surgery residency, Bill then completed a cardiothoracic surgery residency at the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa.

After completing his training, Bill practiced medicine (primarily cardiothoracic surgery) in St. Louis, Missouri, Lakeland, Florida, Hershey, Pennsylvania, and Dothan, Alabama.  After having numerous back surgeries, Bill was unable to perform lengthy heart surgery procedures.  He then moved to Henderson, Kentucky, and worked for several years there as a general surgeon.  After several more back operations, Bill ceased to practice medicine and went to work as a professor of surgery at the University of South Florida Medical School in Tampa, Florida.  He later left to help start the medical school at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents.

Bill is survived by his spouse, Marsha; and his six siblings, Robert, Anne (Jennifer), John (Pam), Joseph (Linda), James (Susan) and Patricia (Joe); and numerous nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 12: 45 p.m. Saturday, August 19, 2023, at Rudy-Rowland Funeral Home, 604 Center Street, Henderson, Kentucky 42420.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 19, 2023, at 1 p.m. at Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church, 511 Second Street, Henderson, Kentucky 42420.  Father Christopher Grief will officiate.
