Obituary

Molly Baker Ershig, 79, Henderson, Kentucky, passed away on Saturday, January 14, 2017, at St. Anthony's Hospice Lucy Smith King Care Center from complications from cancer treatment.  She bravely battled cancer for 8 years.

She grew up in both Hopkinsville, Kentucky, and Pembroke, Kentucky, with her parents, Peter and Margaret Baker, and her three sisters, Gene Walker, Betty Tripure, and Anne Davis.  After graduating from high school in Hopkinsville, Kentucky, she attended and graduated from Murray State University.  Molly could have filled any endeavor, but she followed in her mother's footsteps and became a teacher.  It was at Murray State where Molly graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education and was chosen to appear in "Who's Who in American Colleges & Universities."  She also earned a Master's Degree in Elementary Education from the University of Kentucky.   During her senior year at Murray, she met her husband-to-be Harvey G. Ershig.  Molly and Harvey married on June 26, 1965, and celebrated their 51st wedding anniversary this past year.

Molly had a real love for teaching elementary school.  She taught for 50 years - with 42 years of her career being employed by the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation (EVSC).  She taught First Grade at both McGary and  Fairlawn.  Before she was hired by the EVSC, she taught elementary school in Owensboro, Hopkinsville, Lexington, and Henderson.  Molly was a very creative teacher - she always tried to think of a way to make learning meaningful.  Not only was she a dedicated teacher but also a dedicated wife, mother, sister, and friend.  She would do absolutely anything for her family and friends.  Those who knew Molly well understood that dinner usually didn't occur until 9 p.m. or10 p.m., and bedtime was typically around midnight or 1am - this was because the family was always too busy helping each other on a task/project that needed completion.   On many occasions, Molly would help her family and/or friends seek solutions to problems, and she would always give others credit for her great ideas.  She loved to spend her free time cooking, sewing, and reading anything related to history and/or politics.  She most recently spent her time helping Molly Elizabeth and Sam, her daughter and son-in-law, prepare for the arrival of her granddaughter Elizabeth.

Molly was always a very graceful and dignified person.  Her love of life and faith in the hereafter has always been an inspiration to her family.  She accepted problems with courage - always looking on the bright side.  She could have walked with Kings but always kept her common touch.  Molly helped her loved ones understand and accept her departure from this earth by her desire to enter the Church Triumphant.  She was a longtime and active member of The Presbyterian Church of Henderson.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Peter and Margaret Baker; one sister, Betty Tripure; her mother-in-law, Fae Ershig; and two nephews.

Molly is survived by her husband, Harvey G. Ershig; her daughter, Molly Elizabeth Ershig Galloway and her husband, Sam; her 3-week-old granddaughter, Elizabeth Ershig Galloway; two sisters, Gene Walker and her husband, Clarence, and Anne Davis; her brother-in-law, Bob Tripure; her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Don and Penny Ershig; nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at The Presbyterian Church of Henderson.  The Reverend Eric Hoey and Jim Bates will officiate.  Burial will be in Fernwood Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at the church and 11 a.m. until service time Friday at the church.

Expression of sympathy may take the form of contributions to The Presbyterian Church of Henderson, Henderson County Public Library, or St. Anthony's Hospice.

The family would like to thank all of Molly's friends who have provided support during this extremely difficult time.
