Obituary

Mary Ruth Black Mitchell passed away at 2:05 p.m. Tuesday, February 21, 2017, at St. Anthony's Hospice in Henderson, Kentucky.

She was born on January 1, 1927, in Green Mount, Laurel County, Kentucky.  After graduating from Berea College, Ruth moved to Louisville, where she met and married her husband, Leonard T. Mitchell, while he was finishing law school.  In 1952, Ruth and Leonard moved to Henderson, where she lovingly called home for the last sixty-five years.

Ruth devoted herself to her family and was an avid golfer, bridge player, and antique collector.  No hobby quite compared, though, to her commitment to social justice and dedication to civic duty—interests she passionately shared with her family and those around her.

Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard, and their daughter, Laura.

Ruth is survived by her daughter, Camilla Mitchell Hasan of Henderson; granddaughter, Laila Mitchell Hasan of Washington, D.C.; grandson and his wife, Kamron and Jordan Hasan of Omaha, Nebraska; and son-in-law, Syed A. Hasan of Bahia Kino, Sonora, Mexico.

Memorial services will be at 3 p.m. Monday at Rudy-Rowland Funeral Home.  The Reverend James Wofford will officiate.

Visitation will be from noon until service time Monday at the funeral home.
