Obituary

Margaret Ann Dowdy Sights, affectionately known as "Dear" to her family, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, leaving behind a remarkable legacy of grace, strength, compassion, and tireless generosity. Born in Henderson, Kentucky, on February 11, 1942, she was the beloved daughter of Imogene Humphrey Dowdy and Willie Dowdy.

As the loving matriarch of her family, Margaret Ann shared a beautiful life with her husband, James Dale Sights. She was a devoted mother and guiding mentor to her four children: Bart Sights (Kristina) of San Francisco, California; Shara Ann Sights Hammet (Patrick) of New Orleans, Louisiana; Carrie Elizabeth Sights Eddmenson (Matthew) of Nashville, Tennessee; and Margaret Susan Sights Vickers (Michael) of Louisville, Kentucky. Her heart only grew with the arrival of her grandchildren: James Hencye Sights, Margaret Lucille "Lucy" Hammet, Virginia Dowdy Hammet, Clarke Caldwell Dowdy Sights, Martha Nalty Hammet, Mary Margaret Vickers, Henry Haris "Hank" Vickers, and Sally Clyde Eddmenson. Above all of her life's many accomplishments, Margaret Ann's most important request was simple but profound: that her family love each other and take care of each other.

Margaret Ann studied home economics at Henderson County High School and Murray State University, cultivating a lifelong devotion to culture and hospitality that she modeled for her family and brought to everything she touched.

Margaret Ann led by example, teaching her family the importance of giving back through a lifetime of volunteerism and activism. She gave to those in need silently and tirelessly, always focusing on the dignity of those around her. She was instrumental in the development of the Center for Addiction Recovery, Inc., including WARM, MARC, and the Recovery Resource Club. Devoted to providing an inviting home and continuous advocacy for those suffering from chemical addiction, she infused these spaces with her signature warmth. Her deep desire and ability to create a loving environment and her iconic style are evident the moment you walk through their doors today.

Her pride and commitment to her hometown of Henderson ran deep. In 1980, Margaret Ann prepared her home to welcome President Jimmy Carter. Throughout her planning, it was incredibly important to her that his historic visit be a true celebration for all of Henderson. She poured her love into her community through her extensive involvement. She served as President of the Garden Club of Henderson and dedicated her time to the West Home for Girls and served as a Kids Hope Mentor. Her civic footprint extended to the League of Women Voters, Leadership Henderson, the Henderson Public Library, the Fine Arts Center Guild, Church Women United, the Nancy Eblen Circle, and the United Methodist Church, among many other community organizations.

The family wishes to extend their deepest gratitude to the compassionate nurses and social workers at St. Anthony's Hospice for their exceptional care.
