Obituary

Karen Linea Young McKenzie Goldsberry Mabrey was born on November 30, 1952, in Springfield, Missouri, and joined her Savior and Lord in heaven on Monday, June 26, 2023.

Karen grew up in Missouri where she attended Walnut Grove Elementary and High School and graduated from Appleton City High School with the Class of 1970.  She received an Associate of Arts degree from Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg, Missouri, in 1972 and a Bachelor of Science degree in business from Southwest Baptist University in Bolivar, Missouri in 1974.  She was an active member of Watson Lane Baptist Church, Henderson First Baptist Church, Airline Baptist Church, and Finley Baptist Church where she served as pianist, accompanist, choir director, Sunday school teacher, and on several committees.

At age 9, Karen began singing gospel music and playing piano with the "Young Sisters" and her mother who taught all four of them to play piano and sing.  Her love of music continued in band and choral groups from grade school through college as well as playing softball, swimming, and tennis.  She would tell you the greatest decision she ever made came at age 9 when she gave her heart to Jesus.  Second to that was marrying her college sweetheart, raising four sons whom she adores to this day, and serving in many areas of church ministries.  Along with that, she worked in banking and medical offices in Illinois and Kentucky.  She was blessed again to marry a wonderful man and after 28 years of marriage he passed away from Covid in 2020.  Finally, God brought a third Godly husband to live, to love, to laugh, and to minister with her to the end of her life.  She gained several stepgrandchildren and was blessed with several grandchildren whom she loved dearly until her death, and many wonderful friends made throughout the years of her life.

Karen was preceded in death by her first husband, Dr. Reverend John T. McKenzie; her father, Fred A. Young; her mother, Betty L. Barnett; one stepdaughter, Angela Woodard; one brother-in-law, Charles Croft; one sister-in-law, Brenda Stefanski; her mother-in-law, Delores Jean Blauser; her second husband, Jerry W. Goldsberry; and her sister, Cynthia L. Lumpkin (Garren).

She is survived by her husband, David Mabrey; four sons, John T. McKenzie, II, and Timothy A. McKenzie (Judella), both of Henderson, Kentucky, Mark D. McKenzie of Bradenton, Florida, and Matthew P. McKenzie (Hilary) of Alamo, Tennessee; her stepsons, Joshua Mabrey (Summer) of Henderson, Kentucky, and Jeremy Goldsberry (Erin Keller) of Elberfeld, Indiana; her stepdaughters, Kaci Payne (Timothy) and Megan Gogel (Buddy), both of Henderson, Kentucky; her grandchildren, Addison R. McKenzie, Andrew T.A. McKenzie, Thaddeus J. McKenzie, Landry M. McKenzie, MecKenzie Baker, Lukas Baker, Marvin Payne, Levi Payne, Lillian Mabrey, Arthur Mabrey, Liam R. Goldsberry, Leila R. Goldsberry, Jade S. White, and Ti J. White; her treasured sisters, Janice Cheatham (Bob) of Independence, Missouri, and Christa Cardwell (James) of Springfield, Missouri; nieces and nephews; and her brothers-in-law, David Goldsberry (Cheri), Gary Goldsberry (Annette), and Billy Goldsberry (Samone).

All family and friends are invited to a celebration of life service held at Finley Baptist Church, 3800 Highway 41-A, Henderson, Kentucky, at noon Friday, June 30, 2023.  Her husband, the Reverend David Mabrey, and the Reverend Nathan Whisnant will officiate.  Burial will be in Fernwood Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until service time Friday at the church.

Pallbearers will be her four sons and her nephews, Casey and Seth Goldsberry.
