Henderson County
Joretta Decker Agnew, 91, of Henderson County, passed away on Friday, January 14, 2022.
Jo was a loving mother and Gran Gran to many and was always taking care of others. Her love was children. She loved being a cheerleader for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren at their many activities. This support earned her the nickname of "Go-Retta".
Joretta held several jobs and roles during her life. She began work at the local newspaper (The Gleaner) after graduating from high school. There she worked in distribution and knew the names of almost every street in Henderson County. In later years, she worked for the Henderson County Sheriff's Department and served under three sheriffs. Continuing on in public service, she also worked in the County Court Clerk's office. Mrs. Agnew worked with her husband as clerk and partner at the Farm Bureau Service Center until they retired in 2011 after more than 30 years.
Mrs. Agnew was a member of the Cairo United Methodist Church where she served in many leadership roles. She was a Sunday School Teacher and served on the parsonage committee and annex building committee. She was well known for initiating the church sausage sale and Vidalia onion fund raiser.
Mrs. Agnew supported many community projects and organizations. She served on the local Farm Bureau Women's Committee, was president of her local Extension Homemaker's Club, and was adult leader to the Cairo Busy Bee 4-H club. She taught many 4-Hers to sew, cook, and value community service.
Joretta was preceded in death by her husband of 71 years, Lloyd Agnew; her parents, Charles Robert and Nora Decker; a sister, Sue Leigh; and grandson, Kyle Ramage.
She is survived by daughters, Karen Ramage and Ava (Ken) Taylor; grandchildren Megan Ramage, Cameron (Emily) Taylor, and Liles (Robin) Taylor; great-grandchildren, James Ava Taylor, Jolee Taylor, Bennett Taylor, and Aubrey DeBat; and nieces and nephews.
There will be no visitation or services at this time. A memorial will be held at a later date.
