Obituary

Ruth "Joan" McFarland Myers, 98, of Henderson, KY, went to be with the lord at 12:08 a.m. on Monday, October 14, 2024, at Red Banks Skilled Nursing Home.

She was born December 17, 1925, in Fort Madison, IA, where she called home with her close-knit family for many years.  A majority of her career was as an accomplished legal secretary.  While doing her second and most compassionate job as ball room dance instructor at the Arthur Murray Dance Studio, she met and married the love of her of life.  Proud wife and mother of three moved with her family to Henderson in 1964 where her last child was born and nicknamed "Tucky" to commemorate the state she would love and live the rest of her days.

True to her faith, Joan and her family spent every Sunday in attendance at the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), deepening her roots and a lifelong membership.  She led by example for her family to follow and remained active in church committees and groups, eventually becoming Deacon Emeritus.  Her time as a legal secretary led Joan to volunteer at the American Red Cross where her skills and dedication landed her a position coordinating all activities and blood drives until she retired after many years of service.  Beyond her prolific career and love for raising four children, her drive for staying active was spent doing award winning couples square and ball room dancing with her husband, Jim.  And not to be missed was bowling that kept her young as she stayed a regular member in leagues, rolling a 12-pound ball, well until 92 years of age.

She was preceded in death by husband and the love of her life, James R. Myers; her parents, Walter F. and Ruth D. Wright McFarland; two brothers, Robert "Bob" L. McFarland and Walter "Corky" F. McFarland, Jr.; one sister, Wanda "Jean" Truelove; one daughter-in-law, Alice J. Myers; and one great-grandson, Bentley Woods.

Survivors include four children, James W. Myers, Gale A. Myers and wife, Gail, Teri L. Cobb and husband, Terry, and Elliott F. Myers and wife, Terrie, all of Henderson.  She cherished 11 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, October 17, 2024, at First Christian Church with Dr. Chuck Summers and Rev. David Clifford officiating.  Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. until service time Thursday at the church.

Pallbearers will be Steven Johnson, Jeremy Myers, Peyton Myers, Noah Myers, Logan Johnson, Issac Myers, Braeden Myers-Curry, and Alston Watt.
