James William
Weis
May 23, 1934 — Dec 27, 2022
Evansville, IN, Formerly of Henderson
James William Weis, 88, of Evansville, Indiana, formerly of Henderson, Kentucky, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, December 27, 2022, at Good Samaritan Home in Evansville, Indiana.
Jim was born in St. Wendel, Indiana, on May 23, 1934, to the late Matilda (Martin) and Jacob Weis having two brothers and two sisters. Jim grew up in the rural area of St. Wendel, Indiana, and worked side by side with his parents and siblings on the family farm. Instead of finishing school, Jim chose his passion for agriculture. He was also a member of the Indiana National Guard.
Jim married the love of his life, Sylvia Louise Hicks, on August 25, 1956, and proceeded to have four children. They raised their family in Henderson, Kentucky, and were devout members of Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church. Jim was a fourth degree member of the local Knights of Columbus where he volunteered many hours.
After Jim married Sylvia, he was employed as a meat packer for Emge Foods for a time. Later, alongside of his brother, Roman Weis, Jim was a row crop farmer and raised livestock in Henderson, Kentucky. In 1962, the two siblings co-operated/owned a local custom processing slaughtering house, Henderson Slaughtering Co., until Jim retired in 1986.
Upon retirement, he and Sylvia traveled a bit and then in 1999 settled in Lake Placid, Florida. Later in 2002, they moved to Bowling Green, Kentucky, to be closer to family. Jim worked at various grocery stores while he lived in both Florida and Bowling Green as a retail associate until he was 85 years old. In 2020, both he and Sylvia moved back to their hometown of Henderson, Kentucky.
He was proud of his German American heritage and would celebrate his rendition of the simple but popular German song, Schnitzelbank , at any chance. He was a lover of all things sweet, enjoyed playing cards, and up until his latter years loved to dance the evening away with Sylvia.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Clinton Weis and Roman Weis; his wife of 66 years, Sylvia Weis; and his son, Danny Weis.
Jim was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle. He is loved and missed by his surviving three daughters, Jennifer (Mike) Jones of Henderson Kentucky, Joanne (Darrell) Hatfield of White Plains, Kentucky, and Rita (Chad) Combs of Goodlettsville, Tennessee; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; his sisters, Rosie Neumann and Ruth Will, both of St. Wendel, Indiana; along with many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Visitation to celebrate his life will be 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, January 2, 2023, and 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Tuesday, January 3, 2023, at Rudy-Rowland Funeral Home where a rosary will be said at 6 p.m. Monday, January 2, 2023.
A funeral mass be at noon Tuesday, January 3, 2023, at Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church. Father Larry McBride, Father John Vaughan, and Father Carl McCarthy will officiate. Burial will be in St. Louis Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Zachary Combs, Mike Neumann, Paul Weis, John Weis, Tony Weis, and Donnie Will.
In lieu of flowers and gifts, donations may be made in his memory to Good Samaritan Home.
