Joy Griffin Mitchell, 83, Henderson, Kentucky, went to be with the Lord at 8 a.m. Monday, December 2, 2013, at her home after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
She was a member of Immanuel Baptist Temple and also a charter member of Calvary Baptist Church in Washington, Indiana, where she taught Sunday school, played the piano, and sang. Joy was a bookkeeper with the Washington Nursing Center in Washington for more than 30 years. Along with her late husband, Bill, Joy owned and operated Rainey’s Sporting Goods in Washington for more than 20 years. She was a dedicated wife, mother, sister, and friend.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Billy Guy Mitchell, who died December 24, 1998; her parents, Charlie Clay and Emma Jeanette Galloway Griffin; one brother, Jimmy Griffin; and one brother-in-law, W.J. “Buddy” Mitchell.
Survivors include one daughter, Marcy G. Mitchell of Henderson; one son, David G. Mitchell and his wife, Madonna, of Evansville; one brother, Jerry Griffin of Owensboro; one granddaughter, Amanda Isaac; two great-grandchildren, Phoenix and Jazlynn; nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Immanuel Baptist Temple. The Reverend Ken Gazaway will officiate. Burial will be in Fairmont Cemetery.
Friends may call from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Rudy-Rowland Funeral Home in Henderson.
